2017-08-11 · Most of my Grand Tour books I’ve been finding off my own bat, but Antal Szerb’s 1937 novel Journey by Moonlight (Utas és holdvilág) was a recommendation from a friend. When I spotted it was in the library (the only Hungarian novel in translation we have, apart from Imre Kertész’s brilliant but harrowing Fatelessness , which I read last year), I was convinced it was meant to be. We talked about everything including those special authors that mean so much and Antal Szerb was one that I had not heard of before. He urged me to read Journey by Moonlight and sent me a wonderful review from The Guardian by Nicholas Lezard (28 July 2001) and it inspired me to read it.

At the age of 39, Szerb wrote an authoritative History of World Literature. He wrote his first novel, The Pendragon Legend, in 1934, followed by Journey by Moonlight in 1937 and The Queen's Necklace in 1943. These, and a collection of his short stories, Love in a Bottle, are also published in English by Pushkin Press.
